It’s been five whole years since we released our very first collection of utter speculation. Since then everything has changed, not in the least being that our little workshop of friends has turned into an indie publisher, and our collections of utter speculation are now filled with stories by amazing authors from all over the world.

For our fifth anniversary, I wanted to hit a few notes that resonated in years past. I wanted a local element, like Jersey Devil, because it’s so fun to be in the spaces where the stories happen. I wanted a ghostly element, like Lady in White. I always found it interesting that for that story alone, no one tried to find a logical and scientific explanation. And, as with all our previous subjects, I wanted something that could be humanized.

All of our subjects, from Roanoke to the Dancing Plague have started out seeming almost too big and distant to be relatable, and yet when authors have broken them down, they have all found this core of what it means to be human.

Cry Baby Bridge plays so well into that. What, after all, could be more human than the worry, sorrow and fear that come when you hear a baby crying and don’t know how to help?

Because this collection is special, we’re also offering twice our usual payment for accepted stories, and we hope to roll out some other special features once we’re further along, so check back for details.

Thank you to everyone who has been on this journey with me, and who has supported us in our many endeavors.

And a shout to to Dan, who passed after the release of Roanoke, but still checks in from time to time. This ones for you, buddy. They’re all for you.
