Cry Baby Bridge story: Underneath
Three boys take a legend trip to the haunted bridge in town, and awaken a curse that sets its firefly eyes upon them.
What are you reading right now?
“The Strange” by Nathan Ballingrud.
books/short stories/poems/publishing projects you have out in the world now.
My short story “On A Quiet Street, In A Friendly Neighborhood” will be in the September issue of ParABnormal Magazine. My short story “The Welcome Wagon of Widgeon Woods” will be the Critical Blast anthology “The Monsters Next Door.”
What made you decide to write a story for Cry Baby Bridge: A collection of utter speculation?
Did you grow up with a cry baby bridge legend? Is it something that affected you or was it a new story for you?
I grew up very close to an infamous cry baby bridge. Nearly every urban legend we had where I grew up involved the bridge somehow. A lot of the feelings that I had about that bridge as a child made it into my story, especially the way it seemed to have two distinct natures.
Why do you think this legend is so pervasive? What truth do you think is behind it?
Bridges are archetypical liminal spaces, clearly and manifestly so. Those types of spaces attract our imagination because they do represent a sort of black box where things change that we can sense but not see.
What other projects are you working on? Where can we look for you next?
I am working on several short stories right now, and planning a longer piece even though I have no idea where it will end up.
