Grimm Retold

Over the last year, I have tried to keep this site more focused on my work as an author, while I focus on my editorial and publishers work over at speculationpub.com but today the lines must cross because Grimm Retold is out today. It’s been a huge part of my life for the last year and while I didn’t write any of the amazing stories in it, it feels like a whole piece of me is out in the world now.

Grimm Retold is a collection of Grimm Brother’s fairy tales, re-imagined as horror stories. The poems stories are powerful, dark, beautiful, painful and poignant. They are frightening in a way that settles into your bones and spins through your mind on sleepless nights.

Making this book was a bit like a fairy tale, fortunately not a dark one.

I have long been in love with the Bitterbynde Trilogy and the books of Cecilia Dart-Thornton. Her fairy tales are lush and tangible, full of thorns and fragrant roses, so when we got in contact I was already a little bit freaking out. Then she offered me some help…

Can making a book look like a hero’s journey arc? If so, that is definitely how this went. All the way to to the lair of the goddess, where John Kaiine agreed to give us the rights to reprint one of the fairy tale retellings of his late wife, Tanith Lee. Cecilia Dart-Thornton agreed to write the foreword for the book.

And all of this happened before we even started reading submissions.

Everything pulled together around those first few pieces and it’s been a ride ever since.

Now here on release day, I am so proud of this book, from the cover, to the pages, the original illustrations and the amazing stories that I can’t wait to share with the world. I hope every lover of fairy tales can find a copy of this book. I hope every spooky girl can get their hands on these pages.

I hope you all see what I have been seeing for the past year.
